    Construction carries a disproportionate share of serious injuries, and the volume of safety and building information has exploded — risk assessments, inspections, incident data, models, and the Building Safety Act's 'golden thread' that must follow a building through its life. AI has landed in both halves of that world at once: cameras that watch for unsafe conditions, analytics that mine incident data for early warnings, and tools that draft safety documents and check BIM models against the rules.     Who this is for

    It is written for construction health & safety professionals, CDM advisers and principal-designer support, and BIM and information managers — in consultancy, contracting or client roles. No technical or data-science background is assumed; if you manage risk, monitor sites or steward building information, every module is within reach.

    Why AI matters for safety and information work

    A great deal of this work is paperwork and manual checking that AI can accelerate: drafting and summarising risk assessments and method statements, watching many camera feeds for visible hazards, mining incident and near-miss data for leading indicators, and checking BIM models and documents against standards at scale. Done well, that frees time for the judgement, leadership and engagement that actually prevent harm.

    But these tools touch life-safety and personal data, so the responsibility is acute. A camera that flags a missing hard hat can also miss a real hazard, mislabel a worker, or breach their privacy. An AI-drafted method statement can omit a site-specific hazard as readily as it lists the obvious ones. A confident but wrong model-check can corrupt the golden thread people later rely on. Two lines run through the whole course and must never be crossed: AI does not make a safety-critical decision in place of a competent person, and AI must not undermine the integrity of safety information — duties that sit under the IOSH Code of Conduct, CDM 2015, the Building Safety Act and data-protection law.

    The handbook is organised into nine modules spanning the three linked roles, each grounded in real work with worked examples, a hands-on activity using sample data, a knowledge check and a reflection prompt.

    Altogether the nine modules add up to around fourteen hours of self-paced study, finishing with a final assessment and supported by a glossary, a starter prompt library and a list of sources.

    How it supports your CPD

    These roles sit under different bodies but share one logic: keep your competence current as AI reshapes the work. IOSH members record 30 hours a year in Blueprint against its competency framework; CDM professionals record CPD through the APS; and BIM and information managers typically record through a parent institution and against ISO 19650. This course is designed to contribute meaningful CPD toward maintaining competence in all three. Each module ends with a reflection prompt so you can record how you will apply the learning, and the final assessment gives you evidence to keep.
