From the first concept sketch to the planning submission, AI has arrived in the architect's studio. Text-to-image models conjure mood and massing from a single sentence, BIM-native renderers turn a grey model into a photoreal scene in under a minute, and generative planning tools lay out a residential block against your constraints. The honest question for the profession is no longer whether to engage, but how to do so without surrendering design judgement — or breaching your duties to the ARB and the RIBA.

Who this is for
It is written for architects, architectural assistants, technologists and practice leaders, whether in private practice or an in-house design team. No computational-design or coding background is assumed; if you can drive a BIM package and a web browser, every module is within reach.
Why AI matters for architectural work
A great deal of studio time goes on tasks current AI handles well: generating massing and layout options, assembling precedent and moodboards, condensing a long local plan, and drafting planning and design-and-access statements. Put to work properly, AI hands back the hours that used to vanish into producing option after option and render after render — time you can redirect to design quality, coordination and the judgement that clients and the public rely on.
The flip side is real. The same tools will happily invent a window that is not in your scheme, misquote an Approved Document, expose a client's confidential design, or generate an image whose copyright and provenance you cannot stand behind. Architects also carry duties of honesty and integrity under the ARB Architects Code and the RIBA Code of Professional Conduct, which means any image presented as the proposal must honestly represent it. This course builds the discipline of using AI on purpose: knowing which jobs suit it, which never should, and how to check everything before it reaches a client or a planning committee.
What the course covers
The handbook is organised into nine modules that follow the RIBA Plan of Work, each anchored in real design work with worked examples, a hands-on exercise using sample briefs and drawings, a knowledge check and a reflection prompt.

All told, the nine modules amount to about fourteen hours of self-paced learning, capped by a final assessment and supported by a glossary, a starter prompt library and a full list of sources.
How it supports your CPD
RIBA Chartered Members record at least 35 hours of CPD a year against the Core Curriculum, while the ARB runs a separate reflection-based scheme; this course is designed to contribute a substantial, structured block to either. It maps most directly to design, construction and technology, with relevance to running a practice and to legal and regulatory compliance. Every module ends with a reflection prompt so you can record how you will apply the learning, and the final assessment gives you concrete evidence to keep.
