The wall-mounted bar chart became Primavera and Asta; paper snag lists became site apps; manual progress photos became 360° capture. The newest change goes further: software now does work that used to need a manager's eye — optimising a programme across millions of sequences, comparing what is actually built against the model, forecasting a slip before it lands, summarising a 90-page subcontract, or drafting a daily report. The job is no longer to ask whether AI belongs on site, but to use it without letting it make the call.

Who this is for
It is written for construction managers, project managers, site managers, site agents, planners and contracts managers — main contractor, subcontractor or client-side. No technical background is assumed; if you run a programme, a package or a site, every module is within reach.
Why AI matters for delivery
Much of a manager's week goes on tasks AI is genuinely good at: optimising and stress-testing programmes, reading and summarising long contracts and specs, spotting patterns in progress, cost and safety data, comparing site imagery to the model, and drafting reports, RFIs and method statements. Used well, this hands back the hours lost to chasing progress and re-keying reports — time you can spend on leadership, coordination, safety and the judgement that keeps a job on time, on budget and safe.
The risk travels with it. The same tools can be confidently wrong about a critical path, leak commercially sensitive project data, or lull a team into trusting a progress figure nobody checked. And safety is never delegated to a tool: a risk assessment or method statement drafted by AI must be reviewed, made site-specific and owned by a competent person under CDM 2015 and the Building Safety Act 2022. This course builds the habit of using AI deliberately — with a human checkpoint on every decision that commits the programme or touches safety — in line with the CIOB Rules of Professional Competence and Conduct.
What the course covers
The handbook is organised into nine modules that follow the project lifecycle, each built around real site and project work with worked examples, a hands-on activity using sample programmes and site data, a knowledge check and a reflection prompt.

In total the nine modules run to about fourteen hours of self-paced learning, finishing with a final assessment and supported by a glossary, a starter prompt library and a source list.
How it supports your CPD
Under the CIOB CPD Policy, members record a minimum of 25 hours a year, with a core block across professionalism; quality; health, safety and wellbeing; and sustainability, plus a short reflective statement. This course is built to contribute a substantial part of those hours, though it does not by itself satisfy the four core themes, which you should cover separately. Each module ends with a reflection prompt so you can record how you will apply the learning, and the final assessment gives you something concrete to keep.
