Building services engineering has always run on computation — from slide rules to spreadsheets to BIM and dynamic simulation. What is new is that software can now attempt work that used to need an engineer's judgement: predicting heating and cooling loads, routing duct, pipe and cable runs automatically, detecting clashes live, simulating a year of building performance, and drafting the basis-of-design and specifications that wrap around the engineering. A wave of "autonomous" discipline-specific tools is arriving in live workflows, and the big platforms are wiring AI in directly.

Who this is for
It is aimed at building-services and M&E engineers — mechanical, electrical and public-health — in consultancies, contractors and client-side teams, at any level from graduate to associate. No coding background is assumed. If you work with calculation tools, models and specifications, you can follow every module at your own pace.
Why AI matters for M&E work
A large slice of an engineer's time goes on tasks AI is increasingly capable of: sizing and first-pass calculations, generating and routing layouts, interrogating models for clashes, sifting standards and product data, and drafting specifications and reports. Used with care, AI frees that time for the engineering judgement that keeps systems safe, efficient and low-carbon.
But building services carry life-safety functions — fire and smoke control, ventilation, gas, electrical safety, legionella control — and the same features that make these tools powerful let them produce a confident load calculation that is wrong, a route that breaches a clearance or a code, an energy model resting on bad assumptions, or a specification that misquotes a standard. In a safety-critical discipline that rigour is not optional, and it sits within your obligations under the CIBSE Code of Conduct and the Engineering Council's standards. This course builds the habit of using AI deliberately and checking it properly.

Taken together the programme runs to approximately fourteen hours of structured, self-paced study, finishing with a final assessment, a glossary, a starter prompt library and reference sources.

AI and data literacy is a growing theme in engineering CPD, and the handbook speaks directly to calculation, modelling, coordination and specification work.
