Who this is for
It is written for building surveyors in private practice, in-house teams and the public sector — anyone producing condition surveys, building surveys, dilapidations, schedules of condition, party wall and building-safety advice. You do not need a technical or coding background; if you can navigate a survey app and a word processor, every module is within reach.
Why AI matters for surveying work
Much of a surveyor's week involves tasks that current AI handles well: reading dense leases and specifications, drafting the first pass of a report, summarising photographs and notes into observations, and turning a defect inspection into a clear schedule. Done properly, this hands back the time that used to vanish into re-typing site notes and reformatting reports — time better spent on diagnosis, ratings and advice that only a competent surveyor can give.
The risk runs alongside the benefit. The same tools can produce a confident but wrong defect diagnosis, misquote a standard, or expose confidential client and building information. Building surveyors also now work under the RICS professional standard on the responsible use of AI in surveying practice, which makes governance, human oversight and client disclosure a professional obligation rather than a nice-to-have. This course builds the discipline of using AI on purpose — knowing which jobs suit it, which never should, and how to check everything before it leaves your desk.

The handbook runs to nine focused modules, each anchored in real surveying work with worked examples, a hands-on exercise using a sample scenario, a knowledge check and a reflection prompt.

Across the nine modules that comes to about fourteen hours of structured, self-paced study, rounded off with a final assessment, a glossary, a starter prompt library and a source list.
How it supports your CPD
RICS members must complete and record CPD each year, and the responsible-AI standard expects training and documented governance around any AI you rely on. This course is built to contribute a substantial block of that CPD and to help you evidence that you understand the standard. Each module closes with a reflection prompt so you can record how you will apply the learning, and the final assessment gives you concrete evidence to keep.
